Data void

A data void is a topic or search query for which little reliable information exists, leaving a gap that manipulated or low-quality content can fill — and that AI systems may surface for lack of anything better.

How to recognise

Data voids matter because they are where manipulation actually works. On well-covered subjects, reputable sources crowd out false claims; on narrow, obscure, or breaking topics, there may be nothing authoritative to compete with, so a chatbot or search engine can end up surfacing whatever low-quality or planted content happens to exist. This is precisely the gap that operations like "LLM grooming" are designed to exploit.

The encouraging implication is that data voids are fixable: filling them with accurate, well-sourced content is itself a defence, because it removes the vacuum that bad information rushes into.
