Deepfake
A deepfake is synthetic audio, video, or imagery created with artificial intelligence to make a real person appear to say or do something they never did — or to fabricate a convincing person who does not exist at all.
How to recognise
The term combines "deep learning" with "fake." It covers face-swapped video, cloned voices, manipulated photographs and fully synthetic personas. What once required technical expertise and expensive tools can now be produced quickly with inexpensive, widely available software — which is why deepfakes have moved from novelty to a standard instrument of fraud, impersonation and political manipulation.
The deeper significance is not the technology itself but what it dissolves: for the whole of human history, recognising a familiar face or voice was treated as proof of identity. Deepfakes end that assumption.
The durable defence is no longer "trust your eyes and ears" but provenance — verifying where a piece of media actually came from.
