The Warrier Glossary
The vocabulary of AI-driven deception, defined plainly. As synthetic media, automated fraud and influence operations move faster than the language used to describe them, this glossary keeps the key terms clear, accurate and current.
Each definition links to the warrier.ai Briefings, Dossiers and Case Files where the threat is documented in detail — so you can move from "what it means" to "how it actually works" in one click.
Definitions
AI-assisted spear-phishing
AI-assisted spear-phishing is a targeted scam message — email, text, or direct message — generated with AI to convincingly impersonate a specific trusted sender and tailored to the individual recipient.
AI content farm (fake newsroom)
An AI content farm is a website, or network of sites, that uses artificial intelligence to mass-produce articles at very low cost — often disguised as legitimate local news.
Astroturfing
Astroturfing is the practice of disguising an orchestrated campaign as a spontaneous grassroots movement, creating a false impression of independent public support.
Bot amplification
Bot amplification is the use of automated or fake accounts to artificially boost a message's reach, making a fringe view appear popular or a campaign appear organic.
Business email compromise (BEC)
Business email compromise (BEC) is a scam in which an attacker impersonates a trusted party — an executive, supplier, or colleague — to trick an organisation into transferring money or sensitive data.
Coordinated inauthentic behaviour (CIB)
Coordinated inauthentic behaviour (CIB) is the use of multiple fake or deceptive accounts working together to mislead people about who is behind a campaign and how popular it is.
Data void
A data void is a topic or search query for which little reliable information exists, leaving a gap that manipulated or low-quality content can fill — and that AI systems may surface for lack of anything better.
Deepfake
A deepfake is synthetic audio, video, or imagery created with artificial intelligence to make a real person appear to say or do something they never did — or to fabricate a convincing person who does not exist at all.
Election deepfake
An election deepfake is AI-generated audio, video, or imagery that impersonates a candidate, official, or trusted source in order to mislead voters or interfere with an election.
Face-swapping
Face-swapping is a deepfake technique that replaces one person's face with another's in images or video — increasingly in real time during live calls.
Generative AI
Generative AI is a class of artificial intelligence that creates new content — text, images, audio, video, or code — from patterns it has learned, rather than only analysing or classifying existing data.
Influence operation
An influence operation is a coordinated effort — often state-linked — to manipulate public opinion or behaviour using deceptive content, fake personas, and artificially amplified narratives.
KYC & liveness detection
Know Your Customer (KYC) is the set of identity checks a business runs to confirm who a customer is; liveness detection is the technology that verifies a real, live person is present rather than a photo, video, or deepfake.
Liar's dividend
The liar's dividend is the advantage a wrongdoer gains when the mere existence of convincing deepfakes lets them dismiss genuine, incriminating evidence as "just a fake."
LLM grooming
LLM grooming is the deliberate flooding of the open web with propaganda or false content so that AI language models absorb it and later repeat it to users as if it were fact.
Model poisoning
Model poisoning is the deliberate corruption of an AI system by feeding it manipulated data — during training or retrieval — so that it learns false information or behaves the way an attacker intends.
Narrative laundering
Narrative laundering is the process of moving a false or manipulated claim through a chain of seemingly independent sources until it looks credible enough to enter mainstream discussion.
Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII / deepfake abuse)
Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), in the AI context, is sexual or intimate imagery of a real person created or altered with AI without their consent — a form of image-based sexual abuse.
Pig butchering (romance-investment fraud)
Pig butchering is a long-con scam in which a fraudster builds a romantic or friendly relationship with a victim over weeks or months, then lures them into a fake investment — usually crypto — and drains their funds.
Provenance & content authentication
Provenance is verifiable information about where a piece of media came from and how it was made; content authentication is the technical means of attaching and checking that information.
Real-time deepfake video call fraud
Real-time deepfake video call fraud is a scam in which one or more participants on a live video meeting are AI-generated deepfakes, used to authorise fraudulent payments or actions.
Synthetic-endorsement investment fraud
Synthetic-endorsement investment fraud is a scam that uses AI-generated deepfakes of public figures appearing to endorse fake trading, crypto or "AI investment" platforms.
Synthetic identity
A synthetic identity is a fabricated persona — often combining real stolen data with AI-generated details, documents, photographs, or voice — used to pass as a genuine person.
Synthetic media
Synthetic media is any content — text, image, audio, video or persona — that is generated or substantially altered by artificial intelligence rather than captured from reality.
Voice-clone CEO fraud (executive voice fraud)
Voice-clone CEO fraud is a scam in which criminals use an AI-generated copy of a senior figure's voice to convince an employee to transfer money or hand over sensitive data.
Voice cloning
Voice cloning is the use of AI to replicate a specific person's voice closely enough to generate new speech in that voice — often from only seconds of sample audio.
