Voice-clone CEO fraud is a scam in which criminals use an AI-generated copy of a senior figure's voice to convince an employee to transfer money or hand over sensitive data.
How to recognise
A convincing voice clone can be built from only seconds of public audio — a conference talk, a podcast appearance, even a voicemail greeting. The scam's power is that it inverts standard security advice: for years employees were told that if a request seemed suspicious, they should call to confirm. When the voice on that call is itself synthetic, the act of verifying becomes the act of being deceived.
Because the attack targets a human decision rather than a system, technical defences like spam filters or antivirus are largely irrelevant.
The controls that work are procedural: a callback to an independently verified number, a pre-agreed code word, mandatory delays on large transfers, and dual authorisation that no single voice can override.
How to recognise the risk: urgency and secrecy; a request that bypasses normal process; pressure to act on a voice or call alone. Treat the voice as unverifiable until confirmed through a separate, trusted channel.
