Know Your Customer (KYC) is the set of identity checks a business runs to confirm who a customer is; liveness detection is the technology that verifies a real, live person is present rather than a photo, video, or deepfake.
How to recognise
These are defensive terms — the controls that fraud is trying to defeat. As remote onboarding became standard, attackers shifted to beating it with stolen documents, synthetic identities and real-time deepfakes injected into the verification camera feed. That has turned identity verification into an arms race.
The direction of robust defence is away from a single, one-time check and toward layered and continuous verification: combining document checks with independent data, detecting injected or synthetic video, and re-confirming identity over the life of an account rather than only at sign-up.
